What are adverbs?


Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives and/or other adverbs.  An adverb can answer any of four questions-Where? When? How? To what extent or degree?


NOTE: Adverbs often end in -ly, but not always.  Here are 33 adverbs that do not end in -ly.

With verbs:


Maram ran to the college quickly.
  • (How did Maram run?) Quickly.

When I called from the window, he looked up.
  • (Where did he look?) 

Somaiah then walked away.
  •  (When did Somaiah walk away?) Then or at that time.

With adjectives:


The party was almost perfect. 
  • (To what extent was the party perfect?)
I was quite pleased with my exam results.
  • (How pleased were you?)

With adverbs:


Maram ran very quickly.

  • Quickly tells us how Maram ran and very tells us how quickly she ran.
